BITV-Guidelines
The checklist checks course content against the BITV criteria. The relevant criteria are linked under each manual entry. According to EU Directive 2016/2102 and Barrierefreie-Websites-Gesetz (BfWebG), public institutions are obliged to comply with the BITV criteria.
Types of Impairments
When creating accessible content, a number of restrictions must be considered. The icons can also be found in the guidebook entries and indicate the user groups for which the content is relevant.
Visual Impairments
- Impaired vision, blindness, color vision deficiency
- Use primarily screen reader and keyboard or voice control, Braille display also possible
- Possible barriers: text size, contrasts, image content, ...
Mobility or Physical Impairments
- Limited motor skills, weakness, limited use of or lack of extremities
- Use keyboard, voice control or switch
- Possible barriers: areas only accessible with the mouse, small buttons, time limits, ...
Hearing Impairments
- Hard of hearing, deafness
- Use mouse and keyboard
- Possible barriers: extensive background noise in audios, lack of transcriptions or captions, for deaf people also texts due to limited reading skills, ...
Cognitive Impairments
- Learning disorders, dyslexia, ADHD, epilepsy, ...
- Use mouse and keyboard
- Possible barriers: long texts with missing visualizations, texts with jargon, flickering content, complicated navigation, ...
