Control Elements of the Videoplayer
The following criteria are taken from the checklist:- The controls for enabling captioning and audio description are at the same interaction level as the controls for playback control (e.g., play, pause, volume, etc.).
- There is a mechanism for selecting and playing the available audio description.
Controls for switching on captions and audio descriptions are just as important for people who need them as controls for starting the video. They should therefore be just as easy to find and reach.
Check the Control Elements offered
Check whether captions and audio descriptions can be switched on directly (e.g. via a button at the bottom of the video) or whether an extra menu has to be opened first. If you insert your videos via YouTube or Videocampus Sachsen, this criterion is automatically fulfilled.
Captions:
The following criteria are taken from the checklist:- If videos with a synchronous image and sound track with optional text-based captions are available, the video player offers the possibility to turn them on and off.
- The presentation of the captions can be adjusted, e.g. in terms of font size.
To ensure that every user can easily perceive captions, they should be customizable in color or size. This is the case with YouTube and Videocampus Saxony. If you use another video platform, make sure that your video player meets this requirement.
Types of Captions
Permanently visible captions are always displayed and cannot be switched off ('burned in'). This type of caption should be avoided. Text-based captions need controls from the video player to switch it on and off.
